A bathroom remodel can be long, messy and (if you only have one bathroom) disruptive of your normal routine. But a well-prepared homeowner can limit all of these issues. Here is a list of tips from the pros at Keene & Sons Home Improvement LLC on preparing for your next bathroom remodel.
1. Empty, empty, empty The first thing you will want to do before the contractors show up is to completely empty your bathroom. Everything from your shower curtain to the items you have on the walls and under the sink should be removed and placed somewhere out of the way of the contractors. If you are able to take down any shelves or hanging towel racks, that would be helpful too.
2. Clear a path Your contractors will need to get in and out of your home often and without obstacles. Determine where your contractors will be parking and/or setting up their equipment (tile cutter, etc) and clear a path to the closest door.
3. Contain the mess While your bathroom is being remodeled, there will be a TON of dust! And every time the contractors walk out of the bathroom to get materials, they are going to have said dust on the bottom of their boots. Since it's impractical (and unsafe) to ask them to remove their boots while they work, it's a better idea to have a drop cloth, tarp or old towels lining the path from the bathroom to the exit they will use often.
4. Materials please The best way to make sure your bathroom remodel is free from delays is to have all materials (that the contractor isn't in charge of acquiring) ready and available for the contractor before the start of the project. Special ordering a custom vanity? Order it well in advance or you could be stuck waiting for the vanity install which could delay the plumber as well (and, of course, the plumber might not be available the day you get the vanity in). Also, be sure to pick out and purchase the fixtures, tile and paint color well in advance.
5. Have a backup bathroom Depending on how much you are redoing in your bathroom or how intricate the project is, you could be down a bathroom for a week or more! If you have a second bathroom in your house, no problem. If not, well, you need to plan ahead to have a backup bathroom to use on a daily basis until your beautiful new bathroom is complete. Find a nice neighbor, stay at a friend's house or take a vacation!
6. Stay a safe distance away Keep in mind that while your bathroom is being remodeled, it is a job site. A potentially dangerous job site. So please, please plan to keep children, pets and family members away from the job site (including keeping them away from the materials and tools outside). This is not only for their safety but for the safety of the contractors as well.
